July has been a challenge this year for haying. We have quite the crop but it has been difficult getting it baled because of all the rain. We have even had to try to flatten the windrows (rows of cut hay) by running over them with the four-wheeler so the tractor and baler could drive over them. The cattle are doing well. Garnet moves them onto new pasture every two or three days so they are happy.
Rebecca is busy with her Ministry of Natural Resources job. She’s in the bush for 10 days and then home for 4 days. She did make a quick trip to Toronto on the July long weekend to visit some friends. On the way back from Thunder Bay, she had to make a 2 hour detour since the highway had washed away from all the rain.
Kim has been busy with all the summer markets – Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, Kenora, Fort Frances, Atikokan and Thunder Bay.
Pat’s sister Marie and her son Earle came for a visit (Earle stayed to help us out which is great!). While here, Marie and Kim created a fountain for Pat’s garden. They used a rock that had been dug from one of our fields 26 years ago (Pat always said she wanted it in her yard some day). Here are a few pictures of the different stages of construction.

Garnet drilling the hole; Kim putting the rock in place with the tractor; Kim, Earle and Garnet getting the plumbing organized; Marie’s finished product with the landscaping in place. It’s beautiful!
We had our second barn concert of the season. House of Doc from Winnipeg performed. Their music has been described as delightful blend of bluegrass, gospel, folk and fun! Here’s a picture of the band and some of the audience – Abby (a friend from Alberta), Laura Darby (cousin), Rebecca, Shannon Darby (cousin), Garnet and Earle. The next event will be on August 23st with Ottawa’s Salamander Shakespeare Company presenting “Romeo and Juliet”. Visit here for details.
