Welcome to Cornell Farms website! We are a fifth generation family-owned diverse beef farm located in the pristine Rainy River District in Northwestern Ontario along the Ontario/Minnesota border. Our business is divided into two components: beef breeding stock and natural beef products for the consumer. The forage that grows so abundantly in our clay soil makes these two products unique.

In 2008, Kim Cornell of Cornell Farms won a Premier's Agri-food Innovation Excellence award which recognizes innovators who contribute to the success of Ontario agri-food sector.

The Cornell FarmThe original farm was homesteaded in 1897 by William Pope, grandfather of Gordon Cornell. As Gordon tells the story:

“Grandfather Pope came to Canada at the age of 18 and spent a few years working on farms in Southern Ontario. He then went to Kenora via CP Rail and again worked on a boat down Lake of the Woods and up Rainy River to Big Fork. Here he “jumped ship” , as he described it, before Fort Frances. He walked for miles looking for rolling land that looked like Scotland. He found what he was looking for a mile north of LaVallee. It was then that he began homesteading the NE ¼, Section 27, LaVallee Township.”

William married a local girl, Celia Smith in 1900. Together, they farmed about 51 years until 1948 when they retired and sold the farm out of the family. In 1956, Gordon Cornell purchased the farm back into the family.

In January 2002, Gordon and Jeannine traded houses with Kim and Pat who now live on the original homestead. The farm now owns three other adjacent quarters and rents considerable more land. Cornell Farms continues to grow and develop as each generation becomes more involved in the farm operation.

In 2008, Kim Cornell of Cornell Farms was one of 55 Regional Winners of the Premier's Agri-Food Innovation Excellence awards. These awards recognize innovators who contribute to the success of Ontario's agri-food sector. Kim Cornell of Cornell Farms was also named Entrepreneur of the Year at the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.
